In math we have been learning that you can describe the chance of something happening. This is called probability. We each got a cup of jelly beans and graphed the number of beans we had of each color. Then we described the probability of pulling out a bean of a specific color. We also learned that probability is involved in games that have dice and spinners.</div>

Our current writing unit is about report writing. During the first week of the unit we wrote about our school. We first thought of three questions someone might be wondering about our school. We've been studying nonfiction text. We learned that nonfiction authors use five text structures to write about topics. As readers we need to recognize these text structures so we know what to expect and what to look for while we're reading. In math we've been using a new tool called a rekenrek (a Dutch invention). These are simple ones made out of cereal boxes, beads, and pipe stem cleaners. Rekenrek's can be used in a variety of ways but we've been using them to understand problems involving comparison. The top rekenrek is in "start position." The one on the bottom is showing the problem:<br />
<br />
Dan had 4 books. Jessie had 4 more books than Dan. How many books does Jessie have?<br />
or<br />
Dan had 4 books. Jessie had 8 books. How many more books did Jessie have?<br />
<br />
These Rekenreks can only model problems with small numbers, but they have helped us build a foundation for solving similar problems with bigger numbers.<br />

We are excited to have some new technology in our classroom. All teachers have been provided with an iPad, a stand (the red thing in the picture) and Apple TV so that we can use our iPads as document cameras or project aps that are on our iPads. This makes it really easy for students to come up and show their work to the class. They just put their paper under the iPad and a picture is projected for everyone to see!</div>

We've learned a lot about a reading strategy called QAR (question-answer-relationship) lately. QAR helps us understand that there are four kinds of questions about books: "Right There" questions, "Think and Search" questions, "Author and Me" questions, and "On My Own" questions. To answer some of these questions we need to look for clues in the book. For others we use more of our own ideas. The literacy coach at our school has been helping us with this.</div>

The day before winter break we made a Christmas tree project. First, we came up with all the ways to make the number 10 (0 and 10, 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, and 5 and 5). We measured and cut 10 inch strips of paper to represent the combinations that make 10.</div>

Since school started we have learned several reading strategies including finding the main idea, noticing story elements, and giving a summary. This chart helps us organize all of these strategies.</div>

We learned that when you give a summary of a fiction story, it should include a little bit about the characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end. We know that somewhere in there will be a problem and solution (that's what the lock and key represent).</div>

In science we recently started a new unit about the moon and stars. Here, students are using a flash light to represent the sun, a basketball to represent the earth, and a styrofoam ball to represent the moon. We modeled how the earth gets day and night, how the moon revolves around the earth, and how the appearance of the moon changes as it rotates around the earth.</div>

This seems like unusual artwork but its actually a number arrangement activity. Students were arranging 6 straws at a time and then writing an equation to match the arrangement. For example, the arrangement in the upper left section shows 3 straws and 3 straws. The student wrote 3+3=6. Memorizing ways to put together or break apart a number help students with their addition and subtraction facts.</div>

In reading we have worked a lot on finding the main idea of books. When you read with your child, ask them, "What was that story mostly about? What was the main idea?"</div>

After reading <i>The Mixed Up Chameleon</i> by Eric Carle, we made our own mixed up animals in collage. Notice the rabbit head, peacock tail, monkey face, and chameleon feet (and many more crazy animal parts) all mixed together.</div>
